Self resolution
All parties involved in a dispute should attempt to resolve the dispute between themselves (known as self resolution). Issues can often be resolved by talking the problem through and reaching an agreement or compromise.

How to resolve a dispute (with the other party):
- Think about the relevant issues you wish to discuss and write them down.
- Consider the dispute, ways to resolve it and what outcome you could both accept.
- Be prepared to keep an open mind and listen to the other‘s point of view.
- Make sure you have all documents relevant to the dispute ready for discussions e.g. tenancy agreement, emails, photos.
- Stay calm and avoid allowing emotion to influence discussions.
- Be prepared to set aside some time to set up a meeting suitable for both parties.
If you can’t self-resolve, you can apply to the RTA’s Dispute Resolution Service to start a formal dispute resolution process.
