Transferring a bond

A tenant can transfer the bond from their previous tenancy to their new one. The RTA holds the bond money instead of paying it back at the end of the original tenancy.

Fast facts

  • To arrange for a transfer of bond, the tenant and their previous lessor/agent should fill out a Transfer of bond (Form 3) or Form R3 for rooming accommodation.
  • The tenant and their new lessor/agent should also complete a Bond lodgement (Form 2) or Form R2 for rooming accommodation and send it to the RTA with any balance, if the new bond is more than the bond money held.
  • A tenant can only transfer the bond if the new lessor/agent and the previous lessor/agent agree to the transfer.
  • A Department of Communities rental bond loan may have conditions for transfer. Tenants can contact them for more information.
