In 2004, 11 successful projects were chosen from a field of 18 applications requesting a total amount of $215,032. Applications covered a range of RTA priority target audiences and geographical locations.
Almost $120,000 was allocated to the following projects under the 2004-05 grants Scheme:
- $10,153 to ABIS Community Co-operative Society, to develop a range of culturally appropriate information resources that deal with various tenancy issues ranging from rent arrears to tenancy databases. The resources developed will be utilised by indigenous housing organisations in the North Queensland area with the objective of maintaining successful tenancies.
- $16,960 to Mount Isa Community Development Association Inc. to inform and educate tenants and housing providers in regional and remote North West Queensland of their rights and responsibilities when renting. Community education sessions will be delivered to coincide with the Magistrate's Court Circuit Program.
- $2,501 to Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre Inc. to conduct separate education workshops in Hinchinbrook Shire for community housing providers and their tenants. The workshops with provide education to both parties about their rights and responsibilities under the Residential Tenancies Act 1994.
- $12,080 to Educang Ltd to develop an educational learning resource including DVD, student activities and teacher notes specifically designed to the learning requirements of students with special educational needs. The resource will cover the whole renting cycle - from starting to ending a tenancy. The completed resource will be used by students who have completed or are completing their final year of secondary education.
- $9,954 to West End Community House to inform residents living in residential services within the South Brisbane area of their rights and responsibilities under the Residential Services (Accommodation) Act 2002. This project will be delivered as a series of breakfast sessions where residents will be invited to participate in a range of educational activities.
- $12,000 to New Farm Neighbourhood Centre Inc. to coordinate a series of community education events involving Playback Theatre performances that will explore residents' stories and experiences relevant to the Residential Services (Accommodation) Act 2002. Guest agencies and organizations will be invited to attend to enable residents to link in with local services. Visual resources will be developed for further use by other organisations.
- $9,998 to Bayside Tenancy Advice & Advocacy Service Inc. to coordinate a number of open forums on each of the Bay Islands to collate tenancy issues and deliver workshops to educate people about their rights and responsibilities under the Residential Tenancies Act 1994.
- $12,000 to Tenants' Union of Queensland Inc. to develop a video/DVD information resource about the procedures and requirements for tenants and residents when appearing in the Small Claims Tribunal for tenancy matters.
- $14,831 to Fraser Coast Tenant Advice and Advocacy Service to deliver a series of workshops to educate young people about their rights and responsibilities as a tenant and provide information and tools that will assist young people to maintain successful tenancies.
- $12,000 to Ipswich Tenancy Advocacy Service Inc. to design and deliver a series of workshops to address relevant issues and provide further information to assist young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tenants and youth from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in maintaining successful tenancies.
- $7,500 to Toowoomba Community Legal Service to research the educational requirements of local community housing tenants to inform the ongoing development of targeted education programs for tenants and inform housing providers regarding organisational training needs.
