Grant recipients 2005

Fourteen community organisations have received part of a record grants funding budget of over $154,000 from the RTA.  The successful organisations were chosen from a field of 25 applications requesting a total amount of $284,575.

The 2005-06 Grants Scheme was awarded to projects targetting a range of RTA priority target groups and geographical areas including:

  • $3,500 to Blind Citizens Australia (Brisbane Branch) to help develop improved tenancy information for blind and vision-impaired tenants throughout Queensland.
  • $20,153 to Queenslanders with a Disability Network and Queensland Disability Housing Coalition Inc. to extend the Hot Topics Network to the regional areas of Toowoomba, Gympie and the Gold Coast, informing people with a disability of their tenancy rights and responsibilities.
  • $12,000 to Youth and Family Services (Logan City) Inc. to develop and deliver user-friendly tenancy information to aged rental residents and housing providers in the shire.
  • $12,000 to Griffith University Student Services to increase the awareness of tenancy rights and responsibilities amongst new students, many of whom are from overseas.
  • $11,794 to Queensland Shelter to increase access to tenancy information and advocacy for refugees via a local area links project in various areas throughout greater Brisbane.
  • $1,878 to Better Housing Projects Association to provide culturally appropriate information, resources and support to Afghani and Iraqi tenants about the Tenancies Act, the Queensland housing system and the private rental market.
  • $11,910 to Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre Housing Service to educate and enhance self-advocacy skills amongst tenants by providing tenancy practices workshops in south-west Brisbane.
  • $11,360 to Hinterland Community Development Association to educate community sector workers, volunteers and community leaders in the Sunshine Coast hinterland region about tenancy rights and responsibilities.
  • $11,700 to Tenants' Union of Queensland for statewide promotion and distribution of a video/DVD information resource about the procedures for tenants and residents when dealing with tenancy matters in the Small Claims Tribunal.
  • $11,962 to Anglicare North Queensland Ltd. to develop sustainable tenancies education for young people, in particular at-risk youth living in the Cairns, Mossman, Atherton Tablelands, Gordanvale and Innisfail areas.
  • $5,100 to Boigu Island Council to develop rental information and education for the local Creole speaking community.
  • $12,000 to Indigenous Housing Services CQ Ltd. to improve access by Indigenous Australians to affordable and appropriate rental accommodation by providing information and education workshops to community members.
  • $12,000 to Aurukun Shire Council to inform the Wik and Wik Way people of Aurukun of their rights and responsibilities under the Tenancies Act and assist Council to implement its new rental policy. 
  • $17,000 to Mt Isa Community Development Association Inc. to provide specific information to remote and regional ATSI tenants and housing providers on rights, responsibilities and processes covered by the Tenancies and Accommodation Acts.
