
The Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act uses words that some people may not be familiar with. Below are definitions of some of the commonly used terms when renting a room in Queensland.
Rooming accommodation
Rooming accommodation is accommodation such as a boarding house, hostel (supported accommodation), off-campus student accommodation or other rooming style accommodation covered by the Act.
Resident
A resident is someone who lives in rooming accommodation.
Provider/agent
The Act uses the words provider or agent to describe the manager, owner or landlord of rooming accommodation. It is also the word used in all official forms.
Residential Services (Accommodation) Act 2002
This law has been repealed. The accommodation types that were covered by this Act are now covered by the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008.
Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008
This is the law introduced on 1 July 2009 that covers renting a place to live in Queensland. This can be a room, unit, house, caravan or moveable dwelling.
Breach
A breach when somebody breaks an agreement. The word breach is used in all official forms and usually means there is a problem.
