The scheme aims to encourage the supply of 50,000 new affordable rental dwellings across Australia by 2012. Over 800 NRAS properties have already been approved in Queensland. The dwellings must be brand new or extensively refurbished and rented at 20% below market rent. Properties have already been tenanted in Southport, Cairns and Redbank with additional properties still available for rent. There are properties available now or soon to be available for rent in Redbank, Goodna, Cairns, Calamvale, Gold Coast and Toowoomba. People who are currently on the Department of Communities Housing Register are encouraged to apply. People who do not wish to apply for social housing can apply to be on the Housing Register for NRAS only, subject to the eligibility criteria. The list of available properties can be viewed on the Department of Communities (Housing and Homelessness Services) web site The scheme was established in 2008 by the Australian Government and supported by state and territory governments.
