Navigate the rental market with ease

The Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) actively contributes to building better pathways for Queenslanders to safe, secure and affordable housing under the Queensland Housing Strategy 2017–2027.

The RTA provides comprehensive information and opportunities for self-education to help all parties in a tenancy understand their rental rights and obligations via our website, YouTube channel, our Contact Centre and free dispute resolution service. We also investigate offences under the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008 (the Act) to ensure renting is fair for everyone.

To assist with affordability and accessibility of private rentals, the Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy offers Queenslanders a variety of services and products to help kick start their rental journey and sustain a tenancy.

For example, bond loans provide interest and fee free repayable loans to cover the rental bond when a tenancy starts. The Rental Security Subsidy assists tenants experiencing temporary hardship to commence or continue a tenancy by providing time-limited financial support. Vulnerable tenants, such as young people leaving care or people escaping from Domestic and Family Violence (DfV), can apply for support to move into or remain in a tenancy through the Helping Hand Headlease.

Many more rental assistance and accessibility services for tenants can be found via these useful contacts and webpage links on the RTA website. Note that eligibility criteria apply for some assistance and services listed.

For clarification on your rights and obligations in a tenancy, download the relevant fact sheet or contact the RTA direct on 1300 366 311.
