The Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) Board of Directors recently held a regional board meeting in Townsville. As Queensland’s rental sector regulator, the RTA Board takes the opportunity to meet in regional parts of the state and engage directly with local members of the community.
While in Townsville, the RTA Board and acting Chief Executive Officer (A/CEO) Kristin Spruce met with local community organisations Yumba-Meta and Regional Housing Townsville. These community housing providers shared insights about localised challenges and their missions to provide the highest quality housing services to their clients.
The RTA Board also hosted a regional stakeholder meeting and lunch. The event brought together stakeholders from across North Queensland to share their unique experiences and perspectives on the challenges facing the rental sector in the north.

Understanding these on-the-ground challenges and opportunities in regional Queensland helps guide the RTA in making renting work for everyone.
A/CEO Kristin Spruce and Senior Manager of Strategy, Legislative Programs and Community Affairs Harry Thompson also travelled to Bowen and Charters Towers with members of the RTA’s Education team.
The team held further stakeholder meetings and hosted three information sessions in Townsville and Charters Towers on recent rental law changes and topical tenancy questions. This was the first time the RTA held an information session in Charters Towers and the reception and attendance from local real estate professionals was great to see.
In Bowen, the team met with community care provider Murroona Gardens, along with Girudala Community Co-Operative and LJ Hooker Bowen.
In Charters Towers, a meeting was held with Jupiter Mosman Housing Company where the conversation focused on minimum housing standards and navigating local challenges in the rental sector.
The RTA Board and Education team appreciated the level of constructive engagement from all our stakeholders. This type of participation helps to shape the way we support customers across Queensland. We’d also like to thank everyone for taking the time to attend our lunch and information sessions, and for sharing perspectives on North Queensland’s rental sector.
